Bootcamp for the Brave

The Five Pillars of Survival
Boots on. Chin up. Forward is the only direction.
When life throws you into survival mode, you learn quickly that it takes more than grit to keep going, it takes structure. Over time, I discovered that every step forward depends on five interconnected forces: Advocacy, Resilience, Systems, Survival, and Community.
These are what I call The Five Pillars of Survival, the foundation of Bootcamp for the Brave.
- Advocacy is the voice that leads the way. It is speaking up for yourself, your child, or an entire community, to challenge broken systems and demand better.
- Resilience is the strength that keeps you upright when life knocks you flat. It is built through small victories, deep breaths, and a stubborn refusal to quit.
- Systems are the structures that shape our path. schools, agencies, policies, programs. Some support us; others fail us. Learning how they work is part of surviving them.
- Survival is the heartbeat of this journey. It is not just getting through the day, it is rebuilding, finding stability, and refusing to be defined by crisis.
- Community is the force that binds it all together. It is a reminder that we don’t walk this path alone. The connections we build with other parents, advocates, and allies, become the lifeline that carries us forward.
Like the tread on a well-worn pair of boots, each pillar leaves its mark. Together, they give us traction, the grip we need to move through the mud and keep going.
In Bootcamp for the Brave, you’ll learn how to strengthen each of these pillars in your own life and your child’s transition journey. Every chapter is designed to help you build the next piece of your foundation, step by step, stride by stride, so that no matter how tough the terrain gets, you will always know which direction to move: forward.
